BIOGRAPHY
American, b. 1967
Pedro S. de Movellán is a master of kinetic art and sculpture. Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1967, the artist is the son of an abstract painter and an architect. De Movellán was raised in a home filled with a combination of artistic expression and technical knowledge – both of which are seen in his works today. In college at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, de Movellán originally intended to study engineering and design, but found himself fascinated by the everchanging aspects of the sculptures of Alexander Calder and George Rickey. “About halfway through my time there, something reawakened in me to begin creating sculptural forms. There was a sculpture near my campus by the artist George Rickey. A simple, stainless steel kinetic work that transfixed me. There was a simple elegance about the piece, yet the subtle motion opened up a whole new way to look at art for me," described de Molleván.
It is De Movellán’s ability with motion in his sculptures that sets him apart. The kinetic sculpture relies heavily on technical expertise and instinct, but finds visual and theoretical cues in nature: trees, birds, and even the weather, but also to mathematics, engineering, fluid dynamics. Throughout his nearly 30 years as a kinetic sculptor, De Movellán has transitioned from using mostly wood to working predominantly in metal. De Movellán has an innate ability to create harmony between the mathematical, physics-based components of his practice and the works’ more lyrical and poetic elements.
