John Terelak: The Four Seasons, A Show of Light and Atmosphere
May 9, 2008 - May 30, 2008
Famed American Impressionist John C. Terelak graces the walls of our Greenwich, Connecticut gallery in his 3rd solo exhibition at Cavalier Galleries. The centerpieces of the show are four large canvases depicting the same rural Vermont scene in each season. Terelak continues the grand Impressionist tradition of portraying the changing effects of light and atmosphere at different times of the year and of day, yielding a glorious celebration of landscape with its myriad moods. New England country and seaside and the bustle of New York City provided bounteous inspiration for Terelak's latest paintings, ranging in scale from 8 x 10-inch gems to his triumphant 30 x 40 landscapes. An opening reception with the artist will be held Sunday, May 18th, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the Greenwich gallery. RSVP to 203-869-3664 or art@cavaliergalleries.com if you wish to join us in celebrating the works of a Modern Master. more

Past Exhibitions:
SCOTT DUCE - JIM RENNERT
April 13, 2008 - April 30, 2008
April 10, 2008, Greenwich, CT - Cavalier Galleries is pleased to announce SCOTT DUCE-JIM RENNERT, a two-man exhibition on view April 13th through 30th at our Greenwich gallery, with an opening reception Sunday, April 13th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the gallery. Both artists will be present. This exhibition of new paintings by Scott Duce and sculpture by Jim Rennert will highlight each artist’s latest endeavors. Scott Duce, best known for his Marker Series depicting solo trees in a surrounding color field, debuts three new series of paintings. His Sorrento Series includes works inspired by the Pompeii frescoes and ancient Roman busts. The Street Series: La Vita della Estrata features contemporary Italian street scenes evocative of stills from a vintage film. The Ritual Vessels Series presents still life paintings of single bowls on tables, forming an almost abstract composition in which Duce engages in his characteristic color play. Jim Rennert’s name has become synonymous with his most recognized sculpture Entrepreneur, a bronze work illustrating a businessman taking the leap from the corporate ladder to launch his own venture. With two sculptures remaining in the edition of 45, debuted in 2006, Entrepreneur mimics Rennert’s own leap of faith from corporate life to that of a full-time artist and the success which ensued. He sculpts from his own experience, often employing sports metaphors to convey the competitive demands of the global marketplace. Businessmen wrestle for the deal; engage in a corporate tug-of-war; ride the waves of the market’s flux. The exhibition includes several brand-new castings: Transition (an older businessman passing the baton to his younger counterpart); Plan B (an executive leaping a formidable hurdle) and Manpower (businessmen sitting on each other’s shoulders, building on the success of their peers and predecessors to reach the next level). Also making its formal debut is Rennert’s monumental-scale Entrepreneur. Inspired by the 44-inch high original, it stands 8 1/2 feet tall, allowing viewers to bear witness to the precipitous moment in an even more powerful way. more
Objects of Affection: New Still Life Paintings
March 12, 2008 - March 26, 2008
Insight. Introspection. Inertia. A meditative calm becomes the excitement of the new season at Cavalier Galleries' exhibition "Objects of Affection: New Still Life Paintings." The smooth oval surface inside a cracked eggshell, a crayon's silhouetted form, or prismatic light reflected from within a glass salt-shaker will enchant and tease viewers. If 'seeing is believing' – then expect these paintings to question the real versus the imagined. Paintings big and small, precisely rendered with mind –boggling details, brimming with whimsy and skill, are gathered from a selection of the nation's leading still life masters. There's quietude and brilliance. Objects depicted are humble storage jars, weathered saddles, or mundane bricks. Yet, everything sparkles ingeniously. Among the artists included are bona fide 'old masters' such as Ken Davies and Michael Aviano. Their astonishingly credible 'trompe l'oeil' [ trick the eye] artworks have continued a noble tradition in American painting harkening back to the Peale family, William Harnett and John F. Peto. Younger talents in the exhibition include Steven Hawley, Joel Carlson Jones, Richard Murdoch, Robert Stark III, and the 'Four Z's': Victor Zaldivar, Peter F. Zallinger, Robert E. Zappalorti, and Darryl Zudeck – each a powerful creative force. "Objects of Affection" – an exhibit promising to transform the conventional into the exceptional, remains on view through March 26th. See the exhibition online at www.cavaliergalleries.com or contact the gallery for additional information at 203-869-3664. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday 10:30-6:00 and by appointment. more
PERSONIFIED: Contemporary Variations in Figurative Art
February 6, 2008 - February 20, 2008
February 6, 2008, Greenwich, CT - Cavalier Galleries is pleased to announce PERSONIFIED: Contemporary Variations in Figurative Art, a group exhibition on view February 6-20, at our Greenwich gallery. This exhibition of new figurative paintings and sculptures by leading contemporary artists presents a wide range of variations on a theme as old as art itself. Drawing, painting and sculpting the figure are academic exercises artists encounter in their formal education, but countless employ the human form as a wellspring of inspiration long after anatomical mastery is achieved. It is the manner in which the figure or figures are depicted which reveals something of the artist’s own personality and how he or she views himself in relation to humanity and the outside world. From self-portraits to Classical mythology, photorealism to abstractions in pure color, this survey of new forays in figurative art is alternately seductive and secretive; playful and profound. more

More than two years in the making, this much-anticipated show features more than forty new paintings in a broad range of size and subject. Maguire continues her famed series of Chefs paintings, her intimate interiors, and her signature New York City snow scenes. Italy plays a prominent role in her inspiration, with vignettes from the Vatican, the Holy Week parades in Rome and a fireworks display in Venice. Maguire broadens her subdued palette to incorporate warm, rich tones of orange and red in a few key figure paintings and even ventures into the maritime arena with her painting titled Long Island Sound Race Week. The exhibition opens Saturday, November 3rd and continues through the 17th. Maarten Platje: New Works 2007
August 16, 2007 - August 31, 2007
August 16, 2007 - Cavalier Galleries of Nantucket is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by maritime master Maarten Platje. Born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1967, Platje's reputation as an outstanding marine painter is recognized internationally. In 1996 Maarten Platje was officially invited by the Royal Dutch Navy to embark on a frigate during NATO operations in the Mediterranean waters around the former Yugoslavia. He followed in the steps of the famous Dutch marine painter Willem van de Velde (1611-1693), the official artist for the Dutch Fleet in his time. This resulted in a series of paintings illustrating various naval operations. The paintings are on a permanent display at the Naval Museum in Den Helder and at the Museum of the Marine Corps of the Royal Netherlands Navy in Rotterdam. By carefully investigating all of his painted subjects, Platje is able to depict historic topics with a stunning level of detail. Maarten Platje’s marine paintings are carefully-orchestrated compositions created from an assembly of several old pictures, old drawings and ship models discovered at antique stores or placed at his disposal from private collections. For further information about Maarten Platje and his paintings, please contact the Nantucket gallery at 508-325-4405. more

Contemporary Variations in Still Life
January 26, 2007 - February 16, 2007
Cavalier Galleries is pleased to announce Contemporary Variations in Still Life, a group exhibition showing February 3-15, at our Greenwich gallery. This exhibition of new still life paintings by leading contemporary artists presents a wide range of variations on a centuries-old subject. Still life is often used to metaphorical ends, as a demonstration of an artist’s skill in achieving Realism and as a vehicle to explore novel ideas in painting. Providing more compositional control for artists than figurative work or landscape, still life holds appeal for both artists in the Academic tradition, and those who endeavor to give a Modernist voice to the genre. more

Bruno Lucchesi: OLD & NEW
October 6, 2005 - October 20, 2005
Cavalier Gallery Presents OLD & NEW An Exhibition of Bronze and Terra Cotta Sculpture by Bruno Lucchesi GREENWICH, CT, September 28, 2005 - Cavalier Gallery of 405 Greenwich Avenue is pleased to announce the opening of Old & New, a solo exhibition featuring bronze and terra cotta works by sculptor Bruno Lucchesi. The exhibition will open Thursday, October 6th, with an artist's reception from 6 - 8 p.m., and will be on display through October 20. Once called “the last of the Renaissance sculptors,” Bruno Lucchesi’s figurative works draw both from his boyhood in the village of Fibbiano Montanino, Italy and from his New York City environs, where he has maintained a Greenwich Village studio for several decades. Lovers embracing, a woman shaking out a bed sheet, a mother cradling her child, people waiting in a subway station, the homeless sleeping on a staircase populate his sculptures. Lucchesi’s deep respect for and love of the human condition, combined with an indisputable mastery of his craft, breathes life into his figures who are captured without a hint of self-consciousness, engaged in the most commonplace of daily rituals. Their gestures are quintessential, but removed from all contrivance. There is something innately and uniquely honest about their representation. Old & New features 38 sculptures in bronze and terra cotta, spanning 35 years of a modern master’s career. Lucchesi’s sculptures can be found in numerous public and private collections, including: Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Cathedral of San Martino (Lucca, Italy), Dallas Museum of Art and Utah Museum of Fine Arts. For more information about this special exhibition, please contact the gallery. more
