Cavalier Galleries is very pleased to announce Bjorn Skaarup’s first American Museum Exhibition, to take place at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT from October 31 - January 3. All of the works in the Museum show will be available for purchase through Cavalier Galleries.
Coinciding with the museum exhibit, new showings of works by Bjorn Skaarup will be on view at Cavalier Galleries locations in New York City, at 3 West 57 Street and in Greenwich, CT at 405 Greenwich Avenue.
Bjorn Skaarup is one of Denmark’s most popular artists - and his unique and whimsical animal sculptures are now recognized world-wide. His very clever works draw inspiration from classical mythology, the late Renaissance and 20th Century American pop culture. The artist has become well known for reinterpreting both classical and modern artistic themes – with accomplished artistic dexterity, humor and a sensitivity to animal forms that is captivating and entertaining to people of all ages!
The artist states: “My animal sculptures represent a number of characters that have been given man-made and cultural tools and attributes that underline their particular traits – the dignity and supremacy of the majestic lion, the chivalrous nature of the ermine, the speed of the cheetah, the height of the giraffe, and the heavenly aspirations of the ostrich... The sculptures are a celebration of life and nature and its many intriguing shapes and creatures, all placed in peculiar and surreal encounters between nature and culture. The result is a group of bronze sculptures that combines the gracious and exclusive with the communicative, distorted and humorous”.
Bjorn Skaarup holds a MA in History and Art History from the University of Copenhagen, and a PHD in History from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. The artist furthered his education with post-doctoral studies at the Warburg Institute, London and Columbia University, New York. In addition to his career as a self-taught sculptor, Bjorn Skaarup has written and illustrated numerous books on historical, archaeological, and anatomical subjects. Mr. Skaarup’s magnificent sculptures are now widely collected and have been shown at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, the Utzon Centre in Skagen, Denmark, the Koldinghus Castle in Kolding, Denmark, the Opus Gallery in London, England and both the Cenacolo di Ognissanti and Four Seasons Hotel in Florence, Italy.
